The Washington National Guard regrets to announce the death of SPC Donald Roy McCune II, a Michigan Army National Guardsman who transferred into the 81st Brigade shortly before their deployment to Iraq.

SPC McCune was very seriously injured on 04 Aug when the vehicle in which he was riding was hit by an explosive device, while on routine patrol in Balad. He was immediately treated in Iraq and evacuated to Germany. SPC McCune died of his wounds in Germany on 05 Aug. He is the sixth member of the 81st BCT to die since the unit deployed to Iraq.

Major General Timothy Lowenberg, Adjutant General of the Washington National Guard, and the entire Washington Guard membership would like to convey its heartfelt sympathy to SPC McCune’s family and loved ones.

On behalf of himself and his Command Sergeant Major, Brigadier General Hilman has issued this statement: "The brigade mourns the loss of another of its soldiers. We are all deeply saddened by this event. On behalf of the 81st Brigade Combat Team Soldiers, Command Sergeant Major Barr and I wish to express our most sincere regrets to the McCune family. We will keep the families and comrades of all of those fallen and wounded in our prayers. God bless the brave and courageous Soldiers of the 81st Brigade Combat Team and our loved ones."
