Youth Academy Hosts Information Sessions in Tri-Cities, Yakima

BREMERTON, Wash. – Representatives from the Washington Youth Academy (WYA) will host information sessions next week at Tri-Cities and Yakima area high schools to educate students and families about the benefits and opportunities of the program.

Information sessions are scheduled for the following schools:

Pasco High School: Monday, March 23 at 11 a.m.
Hanford High School: Monday, March 23 at 12:30 p.m.
New Horizon High School: Monday, March 23 at 2 p.m.
Chiawana High School: Tuesday, March 24 at 9:30 a.m.
River’s Edge High School: Tuesday, March 24 at 11:45 a.m.
Kennewick High School: Tuesday, March 24 at 1:15 p.m.
Eisenhower High School: Wednesday, March 25 at 8;30 a.m.
Stanton Academy: Wednesday, March 25 at 10 a.m.
AC Davis High School: Wednesday, March 25 at 11:30 a.m.

The mission of the Washington Youth Academy is to provide a highly disciplined, safe, and professional learning environment that empowers at-risk youth to improve their educational level and employment potential and become responsible and productive citizens of the State of Washington.

The Washington Youth Academy is part of the National Guard Youth Challenge Program. Established under the authority of both federal (1993) and Washington State law (2007), the WYA is a state-run residential and post-residential program for 16-18 year olds who have dropped out of high school or are at risk of not graduating on time due to credit deficiency or other risk factors. The WYA is located in Bremerton and has graduated more than 1,300 students since its first class on January 25, 2009. The program is FREE for students residing in Washington State.
Students who graduate from the 22 week residential program typically earn between 6-8 credits toward their high school diploma. The rigorous program focuses on academic excellence, citizenship, leadership, job skills, life coping skills, service to community, health & hygiene, and physical fitness. The resident phase transitions into a 12 month post-residential/mentoring phase where students will meet with a mentor each week.
