Youth Academy joins new mentor pilot program
We recognize how much time and effort families invest in attempting to locate a mentor for their incoming cadet. This process can frequently create stress for all involved.
The Washington Youth ChalleNge Program has been invited to join a National Guide pilot program. The hypothesis is we will be able to offer a more robust level of long term support for cadets if we a) extend the Post Residential Phase to be two full years and b) redirect some staff effort toward building increased resources and networking opportunities in cadets’ communities.
Current residential cadets who do not have an identified, screened and fully matched mentor by the National Guard deadline this week will become our pilot cadets. These individuals will have a staff or identified community members support for, at minimum, the remainder of this cycle. In addition, they will benefit from an increased amount of support and an extended Post Res phase.
Current residential cadets who already have a traditionally matched mentor will continue with their mentor as well as receive the increased support of an extended Post Residential period.
Ultimately, as staff build community resource networks, they will be able to help connect youth with resources they may not otherwise know about in their communities. This increased community involvement should provide greater cadet engagement throughout their lives.

Reconocemos cuánto tiempo y esfuerzo invierten las familias en tratar de encontrar un mentor para su cadete entrante. Este proceso con frecuencia puede crear estrés para todos los involucrados. La WYCA ha sido invitada a unirse a un programa piloto de Guía Nacional.
La hipótesis es que podremos ofrecer un nivel más sólido de apoyo a largo plazo para los cadetes si a) extendemos la Fase Post Residencial a dos años completos y b) redirigimos algunos esfuerzos del personal hacia la construcción de mayores recursos y oportunidades de creación de redes en las comunidades de cadetes.
Los cadetes residenciales actuales que no tienen un mentor identificado, examinado y completamente emparejado antes de la fecha límite de la Guardia Nacional esta semana se convertirán en nuestros cadetes piloto. Estas personas tendrán un personal o miembros de la comunidad identificados que apoyen para, como mínimo, el resto de este ciclo. Además, se beneficiarán de una mayor cantidad de apoyo y de una fase de Post Res ampliada. Los cadetes residenciales actuales que ya tienen un mentor tradicionalmente emparejado continuarán con su mentor y recibirán el mayor apoyo de un Post Res extendido.
En última instancia, a medida que el personal construya redes de recursos comunitarios, podrán ayudar a conectar a los jóvenes con recursos que de otra manera no conocerían en sus comunidades. Esta mayor participación de la comunidad debería proporcionar una mayor participación de los cadetes a lo largo de sus vidas.
